Lectures on systematic theology Charles Grandison Finney James Harris Fairchild 9781176296428 Books Reviews
I've read halfway thru the first volume. Finney's Systematic Theology is not like other books on the subject. This book is a wealth of perspective and understanding. Yes, Finney uses his lawyer brain to analyze and build a systematic theology, but I find that it is excellent at explaining many ideas and thoughts that are new to me. I applaud truthinheart.com for preparing this book. I have read a few of his other books and found them to also be very clear and challenging.
If you read one systematic theology in your lifetime, read Finney's! I've read a good number and Finney's outshines them all. Granted, Finney's style is challenging for today's readers. Consequently, be prepared to endure some long, involved expositions. Nonetheless, most of the arguments are truly superb and worth the effort it takes to understand them properly.
Finney shows great dexterity in revealing the interpretative mistakes one can make with the Bible. While Finney tends to be severe in some areas, a true benevolence rests beneath his high expectations for Christ's followers. Arguably, Finney's approach holds important keys for exposing misunderstandings that undermine the Christian religion in the eyes of some intellectuals.
There is a great deal we will never know about religious truth, even after reading many systematic theologies. It's simply the nature of the field. Consequently, a little humility is in order for anyone who begins the adventure of reading Finney.
To help with the task of understanding Finney's theology, get Philip Schaff's famous work, "History of the Christian Church" (8 volumes). Pay close attention to the period of 300-600 A.D., as this is the era when most of the christological and sotereological inventions were formalized and worked into Christian theology by means of political intrigue or force. Remember, there is no systematic theology as consequential as the Good Book itself.
Finney was a true man of God. Though his theology may sound harsh at times, it is far from the anthropocentricism that the Calvinists who have littered the internet constantly say. Finney heavily depended upon the Holy Spirit throughout his ministry, and much prayer, to bring about salvations. And he was incredibly successful. Yes his fous upon preaching was one our bit to play in salvation, as after the work of the Cross, the ball was placed in our court, to respond to God, but it is completely through faith in the grace of God to transform us. If you only have time to read one chapter, read his LECTURE XXXIX on Sanctification. Note particularly his focus on the relationship with Christ
"We need to know Christ, for example, in such relations as the following—
1. As King, to set up his government and write his law in our hearts; to establish his kingdom within us; to sway his sceptre over our whole being. As King he must be spiritually revealed and received.
2. As our Mediator, to stand between the offended justice of God and our guilty souls, to bring about a reconciliation between our souls and God. As Mediator he must be known and received.
3. As our Advocate or Paracletos, our next or best friend, to plead our cause with the Father, our righteous and all prevailing advocate to secure the triumph of our cause at the bar of God. In this relation he must be apprehended and embraced.
4. As our Redeemer, to redeem us from the curse of the law, and from the power and dominion of sin; to pay the price demanded by public justice for our release, and to overcome and break up forever our spiritual bondage. In this relation also we must know and appreciate him by faith.
5. As the propitiation for our sins, to offer himself as a propitiatory or offering for our sins.
